The Ember Garden — Suzani Velvet Jacket — Rose Madder & Flame

Along the trade routes that once carried silk and spice from Samarkand to Jaipur, artisans learned to speak in thread — to render the living world in stitch upon cloth. This jacket carries that lineage forward. Its base is a deep rose madder velvet, burnished and slightly crushed in the way that only hand-dyed fabric can be, as though the colour itself has been worn softly by time and sun.

Across the back and shoulders, bold suzani embroidery blazes in flame orange — a palette that is entirely intentional, the near-clash of madder and vermillion creating a visual heat that Central Asian needlewomen have used for centuries. The motifs are large and fearless: unfurling lotus fans crown the upper back, their serrated petals edged in looped chain stitch; a grand medallion anchors the centre, radiating outward like a map of a garden seen from above; and at the hem, paired pomegranate forms sit heavy and ripe, symbols of abundance recurring from Bukhara to Bikaner. Every motif is raised, tactile, almost sculptural against the plush velvet ground.

Cut with a relaxed, slightly boxy silhouette and a neat mandarin collar, this jacket asks very little of the wearer — a white kurta beneath, dark trousers, bare feet. It is the piece that does all the talking. Because it was made by hands that have been talking this language for generations.
