The Gulbahar — Crewel Embroidered Cotton Jacket — Faded Rose

In the old workshops of Jaipur, embroiderers still work from memory — botanical forms passed down not in sketchbooks but in muscle and instinct. The Gulbahar (Persian for 'spring flower') was born from this living archive: a dusty rose cotton ground that recalls sun-washed haveli walls, animated by a sprawling garden of crewelwork that feels simultaneously ancient and alive.

The back panel is the centerpiece — a symmetrical composition of stylised ginkgo fans rendered in warm ochre, olive, taupe and slate blue, surrounded by arching fern-like tendrils in lavender and coral chain stitch. Scalloped poppy heads anchor the lower hem border, while small four-petalled flowers punctuate the collar and cuffs. The palette is earthy and considered: burnt sienna, sage, dusty gold, soft grey-blue and blush pink thread working in harmony against the washed madder cotton base. The motifs draw directly from the Suzani vocabulary of Central Asia — garden cosmology translated stitch by stitch onto fabric.

Cut in a relaxed, slightly oversized silhouette with drop shoulders and a simple collar, the Gulbahar wears as effortlessly as a shirt jacket — thrown over wide trousers, a linen dress, or your most worn denim. The density of embroidery means no two pieces fall identically; the slight variations in thread tension and placement are the signature of the hand that made it.
