The Winter Carnival — Hand-Embroidered Velvet Jacket — Slate Grey with Festive Motifs

In the workshops of Jaipur, where velvet is treated with the same reverence once reserved for royal robes, this jacket began as a quiet slate-grey canvas — the color of dusk settling over the Aravallis in December. Onto it, artisans embroidered a story of celebration, drawing from both the exuberance of festival crackers sold in old bazaars and the universal joy of a decorated pine.

Hand-chained in wool thread, the back unfurls into a tableau: mustard-yellow party crackers with looping ribbons, ivory bow-ties rendered in satin stitch, and a cluster of candy twists in brick red and burnt orange scattered like sweets tossed at a wedding procession. At the center, a dark pine-green Christmas tree rises, dotted with alternating white and coral ornaments, crowned by a golden star. Above it, the word CHRISTMAS is spelled letter by letter in a joyful mismatch of rust, cream, and cardinal red chain-stitch — each character with its own hand-drawn character, no two alike. Along the hem, a trailing vine in deep pine green echoes the scalloped edge of an old dowry shawl.

Cut in a relaxed, boxy silhouette with a structured collar, this jacket carries weight — literally, in its plush velvet body, and figuratively, in the hours of handwork it holds. It layers easily over knits and works as well at a solstice gathering as it does on an ordinary grey afternoon that needs brightening.
